Is Kakobuy legit?

Yes, in the sense that matters: it is a real, long-running shopping agent that buys items on your behalf and ships them. But that is a low bar, and it is not what you actually want to know. Here is how the service works, what it is good at, and the four things that genuinely go wrong — from a site that earns a commission from them.

Start with the disclosure, because it changes how you should read everything below. This site has an affiliate partnership with Kakobuy: if you sign up through one of our links and order, they pay us a percentage. That is how the catalogue stays free with no ads and no subscription. It also means a glowing review from us is worth nothing, so this page is mostly about the parts that are annoying.

What a shopping agent actually does

Chinese marketplaces like Taobao, Weidian and 1688 do not sell to you directly. They need a Chinese phone number, a Chinese payment method and a domestic delivery address. An agent supplies all three: you give them a product link, they buy it, it arrives at their warehouse, they photograph it, and when you are happy they pack it and ship it internationally.

You are paying for that access, and for the warehouse in between. The item price is the seller's. The agent makes its money on the shipping leg and on payment surcharges — which is why almost every agent advertises a 0% service fee and none of them are charities. Our comparison of agent costs breaks down where the margin actually sits.

What Kakobuy does well

The QC photos are the strongest part. You get a decent set of pictures of the actual item before you pay for international shipping, at a resolution where you can see stitching and logos rather than guessing. That single feature is what makes the whole model workable — it is the point at which you can still say no. If you have not read how to read QC pictures yet, do that before your first order rather than after.

The interface is also unusually tolerant of beginners. Pasting a raw marketplace link works, the warehouse view is comprehensible, and the shipping calculator gives you a number before you commit. Several competitors still feel like internal tools that were made public by accident.

The four things that go wrong

The balance system. You top up an account balance and spend from it. Money sitting in that balance is not money on your card, and refunds return to the balance rather than to you. Top up what an order needs, not a comfortable buffer.

The coupon marketing oversells itself. The welcome package is advertised as a large dollar figure. It is a bundle of mostly shipping vouchers, each with its own minimum spend and expiry, and you can use one per order. The genuinely useful one is the small no-minimum shipping voucher. We wrote out what the coupons are really worth rather than repeating the headline number.

Support is asynchronous and slow. Answers come in hours, not minutes, and time zones do the rest. For a normal order this never matters. When a parcel is stuck it is the most frustrating part of the experience.

Shipping lines change without warning. A route that was cheap last month can be suspended this month, and the replacement costs more or takes longer. This is not specific to Kakobuy — it is the whole industry — but it is the single biggest source of "why is my order still not here".

What it costs, roughly

Two numbers decide your total, and the item price is usually the smaller one. The other is shipping, billed on whichever is greater of real weight and volumetric weight — a puffer jacket costs more to ship than its weight suggests because it takes up space. Our shipping guide explains that line properly, and the

shipping calculator

gives you an estimate before you order rather than after.

Add customs on top depending on where you live. That is not the agent's doing and no agent can promise to avoid it — see customs and import charges.

Should you use it?

If you are ordering for the first time: it is a reasonable place to start, mostly because the QC photos and the interface forgive mistakes that other agents punish. Keep the first order small, treat it as learning what the weight and customs actually cost you, and do not park money in the balance.

If you already have an agent you are happy with: there is no strong reason to switch. Everyone is buying the same items from the same sellers — the agent only decides the fees, the photos and the support. Experienced buyers tend to keep accounts with two agents so a suspended shipping line does not stop them.

Either way, every find on this site opens at around ten agents with one click, so you can compare the same item at each before deciding. Start with the catalogue or read the full ordering walkthrough first.

Common questions

Is Kakobuy a scam?

No. It is a shopping agent: you pay them, they buy the item from a Chinese marketplace on your behalf, store it, photograph it and ship it to you. That model has been around for over a decade and Kakobuy is one of the larger operators in it. "Scam" is the wrong question — the useful questions are what it costs, how long it takes, and what happens when an order goes wrong.

Will they take my money and disappear?

Your money sits in a balance on their account until you spend it, which is the part worth understanding. The risk is not that a large agent vanishes overnight; it is that a balance is harder to get back than a card payment. Top up per order rather than parking a few hundred there, and the exposure stays small.

Do I pay more by using your link?

No. The price is identical either way. Kakobuy pays us a commission on orders that arrive through our links, which is what keeps this site free and ad-free. If that bothers you, use them directly — the guides here do not change based on who pays us.

Is my parcel going to be seized?

Most are not, but some are, and anyone who promises otherwise is selling something. It depends on your country, the declared value and the shipping line. Our guide on customs and import charges covers what actually gets stopped and how to plan for it.

Is Kakobuy better than other agents?

For photo quality and interface, it is among the better ones. For raw shipping cost it is competitive but not always cheapest — that changes month to month as lines open and close. Our agent comparison is deliberately not adjusted for the partnership.
