Customs and import tax calculator

The parcel price is not the landed price. Most countries charge import VAT on the declared value plus shipping, and above a threshold they add customs duty on top. Estimate it here before you buy, rather than finding out when the courier holds your parcel for payment.

Estimated import charges

Enter a parcel value to estimate VAT/duty.

De-minimis $800 — most personal parcels currently enter free of duty/tax. Estimates only — actual charges depend on declared value, item type, carrier and current customs rules.

How it works

  1. Enter the declared value of your haul and the shipping cost.
  2. Choose your destination country.
  3. The calculator applies that country's VAT rate and duty threshold to estimate the charge on delivery.

About this tool

Thresholds and rates differ sharply by country, and they have been moving. The European Union removed its low-value VAT exemption years ago; the United Kingdom charges VAT from the first pound; the United States ended its de-minimis exemption for goods from China, which is why US shipping quotes jumped.

Common questions

Is VAT charged on the shipping cost too?

In most countries, yes. Import VAT is normally calculated on the declared value plus the freight, not on the goods alone — which is why an expensive shipping line raises the tax bill as well.

What happens if the parcel is declared under value?

Under-declaring is the buyer's risk, not the agent's. Customs can reassess at market value, add a penalty, or seize the parcel. This calculator estimates what is actually owed.

Do I pay duty as well as VAT?

Only above the duty threshold, which is separate from and usually higher than the VAT threshold. Below it you pay VAT alone; above it you pay both, and the duty rate depends on what the item is.

Why does the courier add a handling fee?

Because they pay the tax up front to release your parcel and bill you afterwards. That brokerage fee is charged by the courier, not the tax authority, and it is not included in this estimate.
